3A Entrepreneurship Story

In high school I always saw entrepreneurs as college dropouts who were either well known and extremely wealthy or as college dropouts who just bugged their friends with new pyramid schemes every week. But upon my arrival to UF I realized that wasn't the case. We had a big presentation for the Innovation Academy and the speaker was a student at UF who was building PC's for people and selling them out of his dorm room to help pay for tuition and room & board. He began his own company in his dorm room and after graduation he had turned it into a much larger company. He had been an entrepreneur and still a pretty good student which I didn't think was possible. He helped me realize that I can have both, I can live the entrepreneur lifestyle and still have a college degree to get a normal job in case all of my ideas flunk in the marketplace.

I mainly chose to take ENT3003 because it is a requirement for the Innovation Academy but also to help me see new career choices. I've always been set on just getting a job while keeping the whole become a billionaire at the age of 25 and own a company thing on the back burner. I'm hoping after this class that I'm able to see all of my options for life after graduation and have a better outlook on the future.

  1. Gavin,
I find that your notion of entrepreneurship pre-college is a view that many of us have had, and many still share as a belief. However, that is an incredible story of finding entrepreneurship at UF and shows what it looks like in the real world. More often than not entrepreneurship is not characterized by loads of money and fame but by normal people with an idea, or opportunity, that they pour hard work into and are just maybe able to create a successful business out of.

  2. Gavin,
It's shocking how similar our view past views on entrepreneurship are to each other. For the longest time I also thought that entrepreneurs were only people like Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerburg -- people that dropped out of college or were misfits. I neglected to realize that entrepreneurs are also small shop owners, college students running things out of their dorms like you mentioned, or even home businesses. Everyday people can be great entrepreneurs too.

  3. Hello Gavin,
I'm glad you opened your eyes to the versatility of being an entrepreneur. It is a perspective on the world of entrepreneurship that we have all had at one point, however, I believe that this class will show us the benefits of being a college student and have entrepreneurial motivations. I also feel that you shouldn't keep the whole billionaire idea on the back burner as you never know what opportunities we may have coming out of UF.
