2A Bug List
Here are some things that bug me...
- The campus gym is always packed, unless you get there early in the morning. This probably occurs because the majority of people take classes in the first half of the day and go to the gym at varying times after that.
- As an Innovation student we all get kicked out of housing before the last week of summer classes and are forced to find living for finals. This happens every year because housing needs time to get rooms ready for incoming freshman.
- Archer Rd. and 34th street are insanely backed up from 7 AM to 9 AM every week day. I suppose everyone is going onto campus or going to work at this time.
- The libraries are always packed and often too loud. People use them as hang out spots sometimes rather than study areas.
- College is ridiculously expensive. Everyone has to get paid and the government doesn't want to be the ones to pay, making college a paid privilege, even though it's highly recommended in today's workforce.
- Both apartments I've lived in at Gainesville have been extremely messy upon arrival. The cleaning staff does the bare minimum before tenants arrival.
- In order for me to take normal classes during the fall I have to petition to and can still be denied. IA students are the runt of the litter and are heavily persuaded to just take Spring & Summer courses.
- Turlington is always filled with vendors trying to give me information or make me sign petitions. They choose this area because there is heavy foot traffic.
- When driving back to Jacksonville, I always get stopped in traffic on Blanding. Blanding is a very popular road and many people use it to get to their destination.
- I have to take classes at UF and Santa Fe just to stay on track with my major, causing for a lot of gas usage. I didn't take many AP classes in high school, therefore putting me behind the average incoming freshman.
- When parking my truck, I often have to make several adjustments because it is much longer than the average car for that parking lot.
- Campus parking is extremely expensive and for off campus residents it's very minimal. There is a lack of parking garages able to hold off campus students.
- I often forget to shut off my fan when I leave my room, and it raises my electricity bill just slightly but can add up over time. I usually leave in a hurry and forget it's on.
- I have 3 other roommates and we always forget whose turn it is for certain chores which in turn means no chores get done.
- My truck is older than most, and can only be locked from the inside or by key. Luckily I have a good habit of always locking it but there have been one or two times I forget and something has been stolen.
- Chick-Fil-A at the hub is constantly packed due to its delicious food and quick service but it causes a lot of traffic in and around the hub.
- Since I didn't pay for a campus parking pass, I have to ride the bus to and from campus but this requires planning which sometimes isn't an option in emergency situations because the busses aren't always consistent with pick up times.
- It bugs me how easy it is to lower your GPA and how hard it is to raise your GPA.
- A lot of the outlets in Marston do not work and since Marston is always full sometimes you can't find a working outlet near you that isn't already being used.
- I dislike advisors that are rude and short with me when I address a problem I have with my schedule. Rather than helping me they try to push me out and ask someone else. Many advisors are always busy and feel like they don't need to help me if someone else can.
Reflection
I don't like complaining about issues especially if they're irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. However, there are a few problems I've addressed that could be solved with simple products and / or services. Like many great things though it will cost money to fix the majority of these problems and not all of them will be cheap. For instance, creating more parking garages for off-campus students would require a large budget and a lot of planning to find an area that can be under construction without disrupting the campus flow too much. Many issues I have are very specific and if they were to be solved it would only help a select few of people. The hardest part of this assignment is finding an issue that affects several groups of people and has an inexpensive solution.
I find that your list is a relatable one for many students at UF. The parking, the traffic, the crowded gyms, we have all experienced, and we have also all accepted as part of our lives here. Since we have accepted these bugs as a part of our lives and determined that there is no way around them, not for the foreseeable future anyways, we do not think about them on a daily basis, and thus it makes it more difficult for us to come up with them when writing the lists. Some of your bugs had well thought-out reasons as to why they exists, however, some of them were missing this aspects. I personally found it very hard to come up with 'why' for many of the bugs and can understand how it would be hard to formulate an explanation.
ReplyDeleteLots of your "bugs" seem to be little things that annoy you in everyday life. In your reflection you mentioned that you don't like complaining about issues, especially if they're small issues. I wonder how easy or difficult it was for you to come up with this list. They seem to be very specific things that you've given a lot of thought. I ask that because for me it was quite difficult to come up with "bugs." It's hard for me to think about the daily things that bother me.
